No matter your preference, this weekend’s streaming slate has something to satisfy every movie lover.
Elio – Disney Plus
Pixar’s latest animated release, Elio, struggled at the box office, continuing a pattern of underwhelming commercial performance for the studio since the early days of the pandemic. Critics note, however, that the film offers a strong dose of heart and charm, outshining even Disney’s recent live-action reboot of Lilo and Stitch.
Elio tells the story of an 11-year-old boy, voiced by Yonas Kibreab, who is being raised by his aunt on a military base after losing his parents. A passionate fan of extraterrestrials, Elio’s dream of being abducted comes true when he is mistakenly taken by an interplanetary coalition and appointed as Earth’s official ambassador. As he navigates the high-stakes interstellar mission, Elio embarks on a journey of self-discovery and courage, making the story relatable to anyone who has struggled to find their place in the world.
Superman – HBO Max
Superman, the latest installment in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s newly launched DC Universe, is now available on streaming platforms, generating buzz for its fresh take on the iconic superhero. Unlike traditional superhero films, Superman skips the origin story and immediately immerses viewers in a high-stakes narrative, with David Corenswet portraying Superman as he finds himself labeled a villain. The film has drawn comparisons to Marvel’s Spider-Man series for its fast-paced storytelling and focus on character drama over exposition.Swiped – Hulu
From the trailer, Swiped feels like The Social Network for a new generation. This dramatized biopic follows Whitney Wolfe Herd (Lily James), the dating-app pioneer who co-founded Tinder before creating Bumble, as she rises to become the youngest self-made female billionaire. But before her meteoric success, Whitney was just another ambitious college grad diving into the bustling world of Silicon Valley startups. Equal parts corporate drama and personal journey, Swiped promises to be a must-watch for fans of sharp, character-driven biopics.
28 years later – Netflix
28 Years Later has finally arrived after decades in development, continuing the story of the Rage virus nearly three decades after it devastated the British Isles. The few remaining survivors live in isolated enclaves, with much of the world having abandoned them. On a fortified island off the mainland, Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) cares for his son Spike (Alfie Williams) and his bedridden wife Isla (Jodie Comer). When Jamie takes Spike to the mainland, they discover that the virus has mutated, making the infected even more dangerous than before.
Rebel Royals: An Unlikely Love Story – Netflix
Netflix continues its strong summer lineup of documentaries with Rebel Royals: An Unlikely Love Story, directed by Tiger King’s Rebecca Chaiklin. The film explores the headline-making romance between Märtha Louise, the eldest daughter of the king of Norway, and Durek Verrett, a self-proclaimed American shaman known for his unconventional views.
The documentary goes beyond tabloid coverage to examine the couple’s daily life, showing how Louise and Verrett’s unusual personalities make them a surprisingly compatible pair. Rather than focusing solely on controversy, Rebel Royals highlights their relationship as a story of resilience and personal choice in the public eye.
